This last year has seen a significant step forward for the weblogging community. We've had some decide to use weblogs as a means for income, others to use it to promote their political agendas, and blogs have most definitely changed the way news is diffused throughout the world. They represent the third eye, the source that, as one, serves as a greater and more powerful voice than a single news source claimed as reliable and trustworthy.
I think the power of bloggers comes from the fact that it is a constant system of analysis. While entries about what one did today and what one thought about is entirely subjective and can only be viewed as such, political thoughts and news as streamed through blogs are more scrutinised, and evidence can be quickly and easily checked. Wrong or false information is quickly eliminated and discredited, while original yet factual interpretations are commended.
It is interesting how a lot of the Internet now relies on accuracy. Where several years ago, one would have to check the URL to see if it pertained to a scholastic institution or some notable website, nowadays one can rely on blogs to provide accurate information, from the very fact that if they don't, they can be disregarded from the community.
This accuracy of information can also pertain to current trends in fashion, in design, and in social issues of today. Webloggers, as members of a diverse community of people from all walks of life, from all around the world, exchange and reveal the humane side of a world that is often unknown or undiscoverable to strangers or tourists, and it is perhaps this that makes it so interestin to read blogs.
This last year also saw the emergence of other forms of blogging, like videoblogging and podcasting, and with greater mobile access, moblogging (blogging from a cell-phone or a PDA) has had its share of increased interest too. The way blogging is evolving at such a rate is quite difficult to keep up with, for certain people, but it is always exciting to note that blogging is a constantly evolving medium.
Blogs were originally entries on a website that pointed to a certain website the weblogger found interesting. It then became a medium for people to post their thoughts and ideas of a certain topic, and to that sense, that feature still remains today. But with such a power as to be able to influence real-life scenarios like a person's job, bloggers can't help but wonder what else they can do to correct a wrong simply by the power of words.
Needless to say, the censorship of blogs this year, notably in Nepal and in China, represents the hazards that current governments see in allowing for the freedom of thoughts and exchange of ideas. We have to be aware of how blogging is truly becoming a means for freedom, a voice, a portal, and outlet for those who seek change both within themselves and in the society around them.
With the recognition of the word "blog" as the word of 2004, it's clear that weblogging has no longer become the hobby of teens with nothing better to do than to share a sliver of their life to an audience that, unsuprisingly, also consisted of teens. Now it's used by people of all ages, of all backgrounds, a means to portray information and ideas in an exciting format.
It brings me great excitement to be amongst nearly 600 other bloggers who, together with this one project, come together to celebrate this wonderful tool we use with such fervor each and every day.
